At a time where Andover has the highest taxes ever- and is set to raise them again as has been the case every year- I have to again ask about how our town manages our tax dollars.
The Town of Andover, like virtually every municipality in the United States, is constantly purchasing “stuff”. Technically… assets. And though I don’t have a list of assets presently owned by the Town of Andover (and wonder if one even exists) I surmise Andover purchases items such as lawn mowers, snowblowers, chain saws, pressure washers, hydraulic jacks, compressors, automobiles, trucks, generators, computers, and probably at some point a kitchen sink.
Other municipalities will send items such as listed above to public auctions where folks buy the surplus assets and the cities or towns recover a portion of the cost. So when was the last public auction of Town of Andover’s surplus assets? Maybe 20 years ago? 30 years ago?
So where did the assets go?? …And it’s not a small lot. It’s hundreds, thousands of items. How much money has been lost?
I once asked a past Andover Highway Dept Director what happens to the scrap metal- the aluminum from bent stop signs, steel, copper wire? These metals are now at an all time high. I was told, “there isn’t any.” Really?
Years ago the Town of Andover “gifted” a retired fire truck to a town in the Dominican Republic…in clear violation of Commonwealth of Massachusetts statues. Is this happening again?
If elected, and I hope you will take the small amout of time to vote for me on Tuesday March 24, 2026…I’ll make this my first priority. There may be good reasons for not selling some of Andover’s surplus assets…However…I’m certain there is NOT a good reason for not selling ALL of Andover’s surplus assets.
Finally: What do I know about surplus assets? Why vote for Larry Bruce instead of the incumbent who has not made this an issue? The images below are of municipal assets I have personally purchased at public auctions. From the Village of East Hampton to the MBTA each did a FAR better job than Andover. Let’s fix this in 2026.
