Years after I left WRKO I was still working projects with Howie Carr, we were close friends at the time- I did photography and photo production for the books, authored the websites, designed the magnets…etc In the early days he was a guest on the Jerry Williams show with Barbara Anderson- “The Governors” It was the only talk radio I enjoyed..I was a lowly 6 am to 2 PM broadcast engineer. In time Howie got his own show, I ended up Chief Engineer. We hit it off, I rigged an antenna in Newton and back fed some audio lines to give him Don Imus at out Studios- something near impossible at the time. Later pitched the idea of broadcasting from Chicago the day of John Wayne Gacy’s Execution. The next morning waiting for the airport bus I pitched another- Chappaquiddick. He said, “25 years” in about 3 seconds- I still don’t know how he did the math that fast. I ended up renting “The Lawrence Cottage” for the week and we broadcast 25 years to the day of Ted driving off the Dyke Bridge…from the Party House. I digress-
In 2012 a co-worker of mine told me about Pow Wow Chow. That Senator Elizabeth Warren claimed Native American heritage and in part substantiated her claim by her past contributions to a tribal cookbook Pow Wow Chow. It stopped me in my tracks- My mom collected recipes like some collect stamps or coins- we had a kitchen drawer that basically wouldn’t due to the weight and volume. I immediately called Howie- “get me the recipes!” Howie called someone at Breitbart and within a day I had her three recipes from the book.
I knew that literary phrases can be like fingerprints- some sentences so unique that they only exist as a singularity when in quotes. I looked for something unique- I found “Crab with Tomato Mayonnaise Dressing” online which broke the story- The second find was “herbed tomatoes” ..and with the magic of Google in 2012…Bingo. It was a recipe from a 1950’s Better Homes and Gardens- but only a fragment was on the internet. I needed to find that recipe. Why? I don’t like cheaters.
I searched for days looking for proof of what I had guessed- that she “phoned in” the recipes. Plagiarism. I called many, many libraries looking for 50 year old periodicals, microfilm? Then finally- ding ding ding! The Manchester NH public library had a collection…but would it have the tomatoes? I may have been speeding on the way, my Nikon beside me.
As Paul Harvey would tag line, “and now you know the rest of the story” Others have tried to claim credit for my “discoveries” but the truth is it was 100% my work. Here are some images from the the Manchester NH trip.
